Postcards for the weekend 57: Lighthouses

For exactly the same theme last year, I posted three different postcards for the same lighthouse. This time, I'm sharing lighthouses guiding ships sailing the same ocean, the North Atlantic.

US-2483307, Sent from Bangor, Maine
Sent 29 Oct 2013, Traveled 13,347 km in 14 days

According to the lighthouse's website, the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse is located on the most eastern point of the continental United States. It's quite a fun fact for me to find out about this! I'm very close at the moment, relatively speaking to the most western point of the continental United States. I'm currently in Everett, WA and the most western point is Cape Alava, which is 271 km from here.

Private Swap, sent from New York, New York
Sent 9 April 2013, Traveled 13,665 km

At the back of this postcard was written: The lighthouse overlooks Great South Bay and the Atlantic Ocean ... The Fire Island Lighthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

US-2285754, Sent from Fort Story, Virginia
Sent 23 June 2013, Traveled 14,048 km in 10 days

Going a bit more south is the Second Cape Henry Lighthouse built in 1881 made of cast iron.

US-2405965, Sent from Seabrook Is., Charleston, SC
Sent 9 Sep 2013, Traveled 14,308 km in 24 days

The Morris Island Lighthouse is the sixth oldest station in the United States. More South Carolina lighthouses on the single postcard below:

Private Swap Postcard, Sent from Ladson, SC
The back of the card has no information about when it was sent except the sticker with the name of the sender and her address. I reckon this was sent in a bunch together with other postcards hence there are no postmarks. From left to right: Hunting Island, Morris Island, Georgetown, Hilton Head, Cape Romain, and Sullivan's Island.

I hope you enjoyed these lighthouse postcards for this weekend.

Thanks & best regards,

Postcards for the weekend 14: Lighthouses

Direct Swap, Sent: 21 Nov 2012
Sent from Black Forest region, Germany, Traveled 22 days

A maritime gem; this lighthouse is the first building to be erected on the sea floor. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1986. It's accessible though for day trips and for rent to those who fancy a night or two in an isolated hotel.

NL-2074177, Sent: 19 Sep 2013
Sent from Utrecht. NL, Traveled 10,084 km

As mentioned in the websites where I read about the Roter Sand or Red Sand Lighthouse / Hotel -- staying here is back to basics as there's no electricity nor heating system.

Direct Swap: Sent: 29 July 2012
Sent from Cuxhaven. Germany, Traveled 10, 406 km in 14 days

This third card looks like a nice marketing poster for Roter Sand. I'm not sure I'm brave enough for that experience even though this image looks enticing.

PS. I'm very sorry for accidentally deleting the linky for the previous week. I searched for a way to revert it on the linkytools website but to no avail. I am sending a message to the admin and we'll see from there :(

Received: 1 September 2011, Traveled 1,152 km in 8 days

here's from the southernmost: the Eluan Pi Light.

The sender wrote that this lighthouse is within the Kenting National Park.
The lighthouse was completed in 1883.
During its construction, Chinese troops were sent to protect it
from the attacks of local tribesmen.
It was surrounded by a fort with cannon and ditches.

The lighthouse is 21.4 metres high.
It is 56.4 metres above the tidal waters.
It flashes a white light every 10 seconds.
The light's range is 27.2 nautical miles.

I'm sharing this post with Smiling Sally for:

I see the light.

I was a wrecked sailor, with the angry tempest ravaging my wooden boat...Then there's hope and a promise of salvation, coming from a lighthouse. And such is my delight that I keep on singing my favorite lines from the Tangled movie soundtrack:

And at last I see the light, and it's like the fog has lifted
And at last I see the light, and it's like the sky is new
And it's warm and real and bright
And the world has somehow shifted...

I'm really loving this 'lighthouse' idea lately so I'm sharing here a few of the lighthouse postcards that I have. First one is the Cedar Point Lighthouse, "situated where Cedar Point juts out into the Chesapeake Bay" -- according to the information at the back of the card. The lighthouse is of Italianate style. It is listed in the USA's National Register of Historic Places.

World in Postcards October (2011) General Swap
Sender: Cindy, Sent from Maryland
Sent on 11 October '11, Received date not stamped on card
Traveled 13,758 km

Next is the Long Island Montauk Point Lighthouse. It is the oldest in the state of New York, completed in 1796. It is also recognized as one of the US's national historic landmark. The card came from France since the sender has already relocated there.

Postcrossing Private Swap
Sender: David Russell, Sent from Lyon, France
Sent on 6 Feb 2012, Received on 16 2012
Traveled 10,765 km in 11 days

Last but not the least is the red-and-white striped Harbour Town Lighthouse in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Although it's a facsimile lighthouse, meaning it was built as a landmark or to symbolize something, the lighthouse itself is functional as a navigational aid.

US-1256532, Sender: Quin
Sent from Wisconsin, USA, Sent on 29 Aug 2012
Received date not stamped on card, Traveled 12,836 km

It's been quite a while since I posted something for the 'What I'm Loving Wednesday'. I hope you liked my comeback entry for this blog roll, folks! Let's keep our fingers crossed that this positive feelings linger and that they shall never change, and if they do -- only to be better. :)

Nauset Light graces Cape Cod

Finally, after months of perusing over whether to reformat my 3 year-old blog or not...taaaddaa!! My page is now dedicated to postcards and stamps. My apologies to my followers...my life has been one wild roller coaster but I hope the ride is getting smoother now. I can go back to blogging.

Believe me, I miss my old themes for each day too! Music on Monday, Thankful Thursday, etc...if anyone feels the same as I do...please let me know and we'll see about getting another page dedicated for those posts. :D
----------------------------------------------------

And because I expected myself to have worked on this postcards and stamps blog by the start of Feb 2012 (and I haven't until today), I would really do my best to post a new entry as often as I can. There are a lot of wonderful postcards and stamps that I wish to share! :D

First, one of my favorites: a lighthouse from Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

The lighthouse, built in 1877, was moved 300 feet from its original location in 1996. Prior to being relocated, it was placed dangerously at the edge of the cliff by the narrowing shoreline and coastal erosion.

The card came with 4 stamps. One of those is shown here, a 1 c Tiffany lamp stamp. It was first issued on 28 April 2009. This stamp designed by Lou Nolan is the third in the American Design Series.
