K is for Kamchatka Volcanoes, Russia

This is a postcard I received before the Sochi 2014 Olympics. The scenery of snow covered Katchatka Volcano was perfect for the winter sport disciplines and the fierce competitions among countries held from 7 - 23 February 2014.

This volcano is just one in 160 of the volcanic belt along Kamchatka River and the surrounding valley. Twenty-nine of these volcanoes are active. Six sites were designated as UNESCO WHS in 1996. The description in the official UNESCO website describes the site:

The interplay of volcanism with active glaciers forms a dynamic landscape of great beauty. The sites contain high species diversity, including the world's greatest known variety of salmonoid fish and exceptional concentrations of sea otter, brown bear and Stellar's sea eagle.

It is a pretty relaxed Saturday for me today. I am dreaming of hiking in nature, and with that, it comes to mind a hike up to a volcano's crater I did back in Nov 2013. I thought it would be cool to share a souvenir. The photo was taken on top of Taal Volcano in Batangas, Philippines. It is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Checking out my photos from adventures back in the Philippines make me miss my homeland. Which reminds me, I have less than 1 month before I fly back! Yipee! I probably would look into inviting my whole family for a trip to Taal Volcano View Park when I get back :)

  2. Thanks for sharing this postcard. even though I studied geography at university, I know very little about Russia. I had no idea they had so many volcanos. It surprises me how much I have learned from postcards.

  3. Maria,

Are you returning to the Philippines for a holiday or for good? That's a great photo of you on top of Taal Volcano. I don't think I've ever been near a volcano. Sounds like you're counting down the days until your trip home. I bet you were smiling when you wrote this post!

  5. Hi Maria, Your blog is great. Whenever I stop by I end up asking myself why I haven't been keeping a better eye on it. What a neat idea ... the A to Z challenge in April. I also enjoy the way you write up the posts and give some background on the photos. Thank you for recently stopping by John's Island and your kind comment. Take care, John

  8. I can't say that I'd want to visit Russia as much as I would other countries, but the photos are really nice. I also love the postcard theme that you're doing for April, and was glad to see the Japanese temple you featured here yesterday. At first, I thought it was somebody's house (for regular, everyday folks) and didn't know it was a temple until I read more of the details. Oh how I'd like to visit a place like that. Japan is on one of my to-go lists! :)
